What Are Your Guiding Principles
What Are Your Guiding Principles I get David Safeers newsletters, and this was had an idea that was too good to not share. David is a management and leadership consultant read about him on the front page of his site. Hes done a very nice job communicating who he is and why he is relevant to his right audience. In his most recent newsletter he shares his business principles, which are business principles to achieve outstanding performance. It made me wonder, what are my business (or life, or marriage, or father, or entrepreneur, or CEO, or product manager, etc.) principles? He says he wrote these almost ten years ago, and that reviewing them now, there are NO changes to make. To me that indicates they are indeed principles instead of tactics, which can and usually should change over time. Go check out his list it really reads like a short book on how to do better in business. As I read his list I had three thoughts: His list is about people and relationships, not about numbers. He says: I am convinced that people are THE key to a successful organization, so my thoughts about business principles turn often to the people side of things. Where do your thoughts about your principles turn? Can you create your own list of principles? This could be like a personal business plan, or map, that helps you make decisions and be true to yourself. What would be on your list? Once you have a list, this is a great way for you to stay relevant. How? Read on Being relevant is an interesting concept. When I started JibberJobber I thought people would talk about me and JibberJobber for a long time. I got interest and buzz at first, but then things died down, and I found I had to continually put something interesting and/or new in front of people. I wrote a book on LinkedIn, and that did it (for a while). But then 40 other people wrote books on LinkedIn, and I wasnt THE expert anymore. I was losing relevance. I had to do other things, which I did. I still do other things to stay in front of people and try to stay relevant. Why do you think LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook make so many changes to their systems? Some are good and needed, others are simply to get press. When David put his guiding principles in front of me, he shot back up to relevant. Think about this for YOU. What can you do to remain relevant with your audience? Dont get me wrong, this is not just a branding/networking thing. I think having guiding principles is AWESOME. I encourage you to work on your own. And, use what you come up with as a reason to get back in front of your network contacts and create a bit of buzz or conversation. Take a Fresh Look at Your Personal Brands Website Through an Audit - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career A well-optimized website for your personal brand is important in building a more traffic and higher search engine rankings. The latest platforms, mobile-friendly designs, and templates can help you achieve better results. Every year your business should perform a thorough website audit and evaluate what is working and what is not. This means content should be appealing to both search engines and visitors. Here are several tips to help improve your visibility: Take a fresh look at your landing page Visit your brands website as if coming to it for the first time especially on your mobile device. Notice how easy it is to read the content, the page loading speed, and how responsive it is. Are there any outdated graphics or links that are hindering the visitors experience? Starting with these simple fixes can greatly improve your performance. Update images and plugins A simple fix is to use software to reduce the size of your photos and videos loaded into your pages and posts. Also check for any outdated plugins and other updates that need to be performed if you are using WordPress. Make sure you have a mobile design There are a lot of brand pages that are still missing the boat when it comes to capturing mobile traffic. Less people are searching for websites on their computers and rely more on their phones and tablets. Most templates today in WordPress are automatically responsive if yours is not its time for an upgrade with a new installation or by hiring a web developer. Find out what your ROI is If your brand has an eCommerce website then you will want to pay attention to sales coming from there. Track all of your PPC ad campaigns from Google at least every six months, which can be done for free right inside Google AdWords. Here you will discover how many spams visitors are coming versus actual buyers and why. A quality website gets noticed when it includes fresh, original content that is easy to read along with a modern design that adapts to the latest technologies. Well-optimized pages and posts are more engaging to readers, and help your brands website move up in the search engines. It pays to take extra time and a small investment to perform an audit at least twice a year.

Get Your Voice Heard What To Do If No One Listens To You At Work
Get Your Voice Heard What To Do If No One Listens To You At Work Todays post is written by Laura Pierson, a Human Resources Recruiter at a large Fortune 500 company and blogger for FreeResumeBuilder. You left a voicemail. You wrote an email. You left another voicemail. You wrote a second email, this time Cc’ing an entire department. What’s wrong? Why are you being ignored? How can you get people to listen to you at work and get your voice heard? Interface When Possible If you have been emailing your advertising department for the last two weeks without a response, approach them by meeting face to face. If that’s not possible, find alternative ways of creating a human connection. Consider using video conference resources such as Webex or Skype. By meeting with someone in person, you let them know that you are more than a few words on a screen. Develop Professional Friendships Chat up the administrative assistant about the weather. Ask the IT guy about his kids. See what the project manager was up to last weekend with his college network. When you develop professional friendships, no matter how small, they can make your job a lot easier. People will be more willing to do favors for you when they feel you respect them as people, and take an actual interest in their lives. Just like children, people like those who listen to them and remember their experiences. Stand Your Ground When confronted with a bully at work, such as a manager or coworker, stand your ground. First, alert your bully that their behavior is inappropriate. Second, tell them how it has affected you. For example, you may say, “I feel your tone with me is a bit harsh. Sometimes, I feel overwhelmed. I would appreciate more clarification but in a softer tone.†He or she may not like what you say, but if you don’t bring it up, you may never see a change. If nothing helps, approach your manager with the issue. You may also wish to raise the issue to your local Human Resources department, if applicable. Clearly Define Your Expectations If you are a new manager, arrange a meeting with your employees and clearly define procedures step by step. Lay ground rules and explain what happens when they are not followed. One of the biggest problems in one of our branches is dress code. Our HR department tells employees that if they do not come to work dressed appropriately, they will be sent home without pay for the hours they miss. When employees know they might lose part of their paychecks, they care more about following the rules. Show Confidence Would you rather take orders from a meek employee that apologizes for everything, or from an employee that stands up straight, speaks clearly, smiles with confidence? Part of the trick of convincing others to work for you is to make them follow you as a leader. Present your ideas with confidence: make others believe that what you have to say is important â€" that it’s the best thing since sliced bread! Sell yourself and your ideas. Believe that what you have to say is good, and convince others to follow you. Final Thoughts About Getting Your Voice Heard If no one listens to you at work, it can be very frustrating and discouraging. First, try to understand why others are not doing what you want. Are you a good communicator? Do they know where you stand? Clearly define what you want to communicate. Present your ideas with confidence. And lastly, reach out to others with respect and a positive attitude.

Its Time to Rethink Your Career and Get Qualified
Its Time to Rethink Your Career and Get Qualified Image Credit: Stock Snap You’ve been doing your job well for several years. It’s fine, but that’s really all you can say about it. You go in, sit at your desk all day and then go home. The salary gets you by. The people are nice enough and you go for drinks every so often. The most exciting thing that happens in your day is the arrival of the sandwiches at lunch. You need to have a rethink. The average age of retirement is 62 and, unless you are ticking off the last couple of years, you definitely need to consider what you are going to do with that time. If you start work at 21, that’s a significant chunk of your life to be excited about sandwiches for. And when you think of it like that, it’s clear that you need to do something much more special with your life. One of the main reasons that people tend to stay in dead-end jobs is that they have no idea what to move on to or how to get there. It’s natural to be a bit scared of change but having a little courage and taking the plunge will make a huge difference to your self-value, your confidence and to the world. Is a Career Change Right For You? Before you chuck it all for a new industry, do your research. And dont make these 10 career change mistakes. But if you got past that part and still see potential, take these next steps to ready yourself for that next career move. Identify the Qualifications that Appeal to You The first step to figuring out a career move is looking at various courses and degrees that might appeal to you. Getting qualified is a great way to burst onto your new scene and it will give you a chance to see whether a job is suited to you. Even if you don’t end up using your new qualification to get into a new field, it might show your boss that you are determined to climb the ladder and encourage them to give you new challenges. If you need to work while you study, online courses like an online masters in school counseling or a business degree are really popular options. This way you can work at your own pace and in your own time and you won’t be forced to move in order to study. However, do look at the value of the course before you agree to start. Look at the accreditations the school has and where the course could lead you before you pay. Think About Your Current Skills and What You Want to Develop The best way to choose a course is always to go with your main interests as this will keep your attention and lead to a much more fulfilling role. As you already know, there’s no point in doing something you don’t enjoy for your whole life. Do think about your current skill sets and what you would like to develop. You will need to be prepared to work hard and do plenty of research on your own to make the most of this type of course. While you might assume that vocational courses are best, you can also do more academic courses if you want to. These may not lead directly to a new career but they will give you the time to think about what you really want and indulge your passions while you can.
